WISHH Strategic Partners Star in New CNN Africa Feature

ASA/WISHH strategic partner Evans Danso and technical expert Karen Veverica assess Ghana’s growing aquaculture industry in a new CNN feature. WISHH is at the forefront of aquaculture development in sub-Saharan Africa and provides technical support to entrepreneurs such as Danso. Together, WISHH and its strategic partners develop the market for soy-based feeds, improve food security and more.

Appearing on CNN’s “Marketplace Africa” segment, Danso and Veverica describe the ever-increasing demand for fingerlings in Ghana. CNN shares how, due to increased demand for fish, Ghana is home to a growing number of aquaculture farms. Climate change also has spurred a transition from lakes to small, medium, and large-scale farms.

Danso’s Flossell Farms is currently producing more than 24 million fingerlings annually. This growth naturally coincides with an increase in demand for fish feed, for which soy provides a hefty amount of protein for fingerlings. Veverica leads WISHH trainings with business leaders and other stakeholders as they work to tackle the challenges of fish viruses and other obstacles. Danso’s farm served as the site of one of WISHH’s USDA Foreign Agricultural Service-funded trainings this past October.

“The markets are good,” Ververica notes of Ghanaian aquaculture.

CNN explains that fish make up about 60% of the animal protein consumed by Ghanaians, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Danso says one of the reasons for the increased demand is that “the population is [growing] so fast so we should be able to up our game.”
