Record Number from Around the World Participate in WISHH Midwest Workshop
WISHH’s Midwest Workshop attracted a record number of participants from as far away and apart as Honduras, South Africa and Pakistan. The annual WISHH event drew more than 60 attendees, including representatives of developing country food industries and private voluntary organizations as well as U.S. soybean processing leaders. Because of demand for more intensive training, WISHH expanded this year’s program from three days to a full week, October 16-20, for attendees choosing to stay at the event held in Illinois. The “Creating Sustainable Solutions to Nutrition Challenges Through Public-Private Partnerships: Role of Soy in Economic Development” included discussions on sustainable public-private partnerships, soy and health as well as economic development with soyfoods and a tour of a soybean farm. WISHH expanded participation this year by including international participants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cochran Fellowship Program.

Eduardo Townson Joins WISHH Guatemala
WISHH is expanding its efforts in Guatemala by employing a full-time country representative, Eduardo Townson. Eduardo has more than 17 years experience in the coffee industry as well as with other food sectors. He sees huge opportunities for Guatemala’s private companies to work with soy and for these companies to work with their government in offering more nutritious school foods made with soy. This new project will be implemented in conjunction with the U.S. Soybean Export Council’s Latin American soyfoods program.

Honduran First Lady Honors WISHH
Honduran First Lady Xiomara Castro has presented WISHH with a certificate of appreciation for support of Honduran boys and girls through the Healthy Schools initiative. The First Lady is widely recognized around the world for her leadership in championing better nutrition. In August, the Honduran Ministry of Health, Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) and WISHH launched pilot feeding program that adds texturized soy protein and defatted soy flour to foods for children ages 6 to 36 months. Children from 500 families in the Santa Barbara and La Paz regions of Honduras will benefit. Last year with support from Cargill and the U.S. Agency for International Development, WISHH introduced the use of soy flour to the Honduran Bakers Association. As a result, Honduran government officials signed an agreement to buy soy-fortified cookies produced by association members. This pilot project boosted the protein and overall nutrition for 5,000 urban school children and proved the bakers' capacity to deliver a product that meets quality and nutritional standards.

Honduran Bakers Sell Soyfoods in Major Wholesale Chain
WISHH congratulates a group of Honduran bakers for achieving a major breakthrough when PriceSmart began offering their bread products in San Pedro. WISHH helped the bakers with packaging, logos, product presentation, nutritional facts and more. PriceSmart operates 23 warehouse stores in 11 Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Weaning Foods Pilot Underway in Honduras—Soy Product Developed
After six months of development, the formula is complete for a soy-based weaning food that will be used pilot project by CARE, Adventist Development and Relief Agency and WISHH in Honduras. The pilot focuses on the mother-child sector, with the children being ages 6-36 months. The National Soybean Research Laboratory developed the product that is a nutritional supplement to what children already receive.

SoyFoods Training Hub Established in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Entrepreneurs can receive training on soyfoods at a new center that WISHH is establishing with Eden Manufacturing and the Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI) in Bergville, Kwa Zulu Natal. The center will be home to both a SoyCow and VitaGoat system that allow soybeans to be processed into soymilk, tofu, yogurts, soft cheeses and more. http://www.malnutrition.org/vitacow.html offers more details on the equipment. The training hub is an important component in WISHH’s efforts under the Soy in Southern Afri ca Alliance (SISA) supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development. For more details about the effort, contact WISHH Programme Officer for SISA Jacobus Heyns jpheyns@telkomsa.net

South African Market Study Shows SoyFoods Demand on the Rise
“South Afri can consumers are increasingly becoming conscious of the link between diet and health”, is just one of the findings of market research done for WISHH. BMI Foodpack conducted the research in April – July 2006. It is one of the most detailed soyfoods studies ever undertaken in South Afri ca. The soy market for human consumption increased to 49,395 tons in 2005. Soy protein in the meat processing industry is by far the largest segment consisting of 52.1% of the total market for soy. The meat sector is followed by the bakery market consisting of 15.1%; health supplements 11.2%; other markets 10.7%; cereals 9.7%; beverages 1.0% and snack bars 0.1%. However, beverages and snack bars are showing the fastest growth and have signifi cant potential. The detailed findings of the market research are free to Southern Afri ca Soyfood Association members.

Soy Yogurt Benefits Found for Diabetes and High Blood Pressure
Yogurt made from soy could play an important role for people living with Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure says a new study from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Led by Kalidas Shetty, the scientists screened extracts from a sampling of dairy and soy yogurts for properties that could help keep diabetes and hypertension in check, such as the activity level of enzymes that help moderate blood glucose levels. The researchers found that fruit-enriched yogurts - especially those made with blueberries or made from soy - contain active natural compounds that may curb some aspects of diabetes. Of all the sampled yogurts, soy yogurt enriched with blueberries packed the most punch, inhibiting the activity of all three enzymes tested, the researchers report. Worldwide estimates are that 170 million to 200 million people have diet-linked Type 2 diabetes, and the WorldHealth Organization expects those numbers to double by the year 2030. "Cost-effective dietary changes are essential for fighting this disease, and traditional diets that have a higher content of these protective antioxidants are an important part of the solution,” Shetty says. “We should be able to use diet along with other therapies, and diabetes is a disease where this especially makes sense." Study Indicates Heart Health Benefits of Soy Decreases Cardio Risk Factors
New research helps explain how soy may contribute to heart health, through a process scientists refer to as "decreased platelet aggregation." By reducing the density of platelet receptors, isoflavones, a natural component in soy, may contribute to a reduced risk of blood clotting, which in turn decreases the risk of heart attack and stroke. According to the study published in the journal Maturitas http://emas.obgyn.net/, Chilean researchers recruited post-menopausal women to take part in the double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study.  The study randomly assigned participants to receive a daily supplement of 100 mg isoflavones or an identical placebo for three months. At the end of the test period, the group receiving the isoflavone supplement showed a significant decrease in the density of a particular platelet receptor (known as TxA2), while the placebo group remained mostly unchanged.

New Study Finds Soy Helps Women After Menopause
Soy protein or its components may protect against the atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors total homocysteine (tHcy), C-reactive protein (CRP), and excess body iron, which generally increase with menopause. Iowa State University Department of Food Science and Nutrition conducted the research that is being published in the The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The researchers tell WISHH that the results they found with the phytate reducing iron stores was in a group of postmenopausal women with normal to high iron status. While they cannot extrapolate these results to people with low iron status, there is no evidence to indicate that phytate in soy protein would negatively affect iron status in deficient people.
