Nigerian School Feeding Partnership With Soy Featured at WISHH Seminar in Washington, D.C.
An exciting public-private partnership offering soy drinks in Nigerian school feeding programs was a key presentation at the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health seminar in Washington, D.C. on March 14. The Solae Company Director of Nutrition for Sustainable Development Kobus DeKlerk discussed the challenges and successes in starting the school feeding program in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. DeKlerk described how The Solae Company is working with many different partners, including Tetra Pak, to create a sustainable food solution that is also good for the local economy that is a major producer of cassava. Parent-teacher organizations as well as the government and local farmers are some of the many groups working with The Solae Company.

South African Member of Parliament Sees Role for Soy ‘Cows’ and ‘Goats’
Joins WISHH for installation of unit at training hub
Mrs. A. Mchunu, a Member of Parliament for the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the South African national government, attended the launch of a new VitaGoat at Eden Manufacturing in February in Bergville. Malnutrition Matters representatives Charles Lauzon and Frank Daller joined to provide technical support for the installation at Eden that will become an important training hub for both the VitaGoat and SoyCow systems. Mrs. Mchunu, who serves on various parliamentary committees, including the Agriculture Work Committee, is very active in promoting the health and nutritional benefits of soy to low income earners in rural communities and people living with HIV/AIDS. According the Mrs. Mchunu, "the VitaGoat, could play an important role to assist with poverty alleviation and addressing the problem of malnutrition in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal and other rural, or under-developed areas of South Africa". The units offer affordable protein alternatives and local production initiatives for soyfoods that also well suited to lactose intolerant people. The VitaGoat does not require electricity and can still produce multiple foods in addition to soy milk and derivatives.

In the Southern Province of Zambia, the Mukwela Youth Resource Centre has installed a VitaGoat with support from Africare. The institution is involved in vocational training for rural youth under the Ministry of Sport youth and Child Development. The project purchased the VitaGoat to enhance the effectiveness of the institution in providing youth with livelihood options as they offer healthy food products to the community. |

The Journal Climacteric
The Journal Climacteric has published a University of Illinois study on soy and red clover that reconfirms current wisdom on soy’s positive health effects on for women during menopause. According to S.E. Geller L. Studee of the University of Illinois, the authors concluded that, "research suggests that isoflavones found in soy foods and red clover appear to have a small but positive health effect on plasma lipid concentrations, bone mass density, and cognitive abilities." Given the lack of serious safety concerns in the short term, it would appear that including soy and red clover in the diet of postmenopausal women, not withstanding a soy allergy, might be beneficial." Hong Kong Study Say Higher Soy Intake, Balanced Diet Can Reduce Mortality
The University of Hong Kong released a study in January that finds higher soy intake and a balanced diet can help reduce risk of death. The university's faculty of medicine conducted a study which captured 81 percent of the death case in Hong Kong in 1998. Researchers collected information on eating habits of the deaths 10 years earlier, as well as that of similar living people of the same age. The results show that people with a higher soy intake had a lower risk of death. Those who ate soy four or more times per week had about 30 percent lower risk of death compared with those who ate soy less than once per month. The head of the university's department of community medicine Professor Lam Tai-hing said that soy is rich in protein and fiber and can help reduce the chance of having cancer and heart disease.
The study results were published in 2006 in two medical journals -- Preventive Medicine and International Journal of Epidemiology

U.S. Soyfoods Council Offers Many Resources
The Soyfoods Council also offers a wide array of recipes and other information at www.soyfoodscouncil.com. Its membership represents nearly all facets of the food industry including soyfood product manufacturers, ingredient suppliers, state and national soybean checkoff boards, food retailers and distributors, health and food professionals.
Soy Companies Can Gain Visibility and Contacts Through Global Resource Book
